    FXCM - Limited historical data

    Hello,

I just got my FXCM account linked up with NT 7.12 and everything appears to be working correctly. The problem that I am having however is that when I attempt to download historical data for a currency pair (say, EUR/USD) it seems to only download about 10 days of data when my request was 1 year (1m/1d data.)

I'd like to be able to backtest a series of data (2+ years) against some of my strategies but am confused as to how to extend the period that is tested.

    Thank you,

    Phil

    Hello Phil,

    Thanks for writing in.

At this time unfortunately there is a limited amount of historical data when connecting FXCM with NinjaTrader.
FXCM currently is scheduled to be doing some server upgrades to address the historical data however we do not have a current ETA on this item.

Thank you Brandon. Do you know what the current amount of data is with FXCM and the anticipated amount when the upgrades go through?

        Hello Phil,

        Thanks for your reply.

What I have been seeing is about 5 days of historical data currently. Unfortunately I do not have information on the expected amount of historical data after the upgrade.

          FXCM spoiling what existed ...

FXCM until a couple of months ago, not had this restriction and could reasonably bring data to about 90 days ago.

However this change and not just simply the restriction of 5-10 days, but the data starts to leave spaces that are impossible to fill.

Unfortunately I've had to stop using Ninja by these problems and return to the orginal FXCM platform.

          Regards

            Hello Ekann,

            Thanks for your reply.

It would be recommend to use another data provider in the mean time to backfill historical data with NinjaTrader.

Kinetick has been designed to be the optimal market data feed for the NinjaTrader 7 platform and is Free for End of Day data for stocks, futures and Forex.

That is unfortunate that the FXCM available historical data is so low.

Which provider would you recommend for minute tick data with a range of >6 months? Because I am only dabbling in some back testing strategies, it would be nice if the service was free or cheap!

              Thanks!

                Hi CaptainFill,

Unfortunately I do not know of a source offering six months worth of tick data however some providers you might check in to are BarChart, eSignal, IQ Feed or Kinetick.

Visiting FXCM forum, surprising that there is no thread or reference to this problem!! Guys maybe it's time to show the people of FXCM that this problem exists and its affecting us.

I've left my post there and I hope you express your concerns and problems regarding this matter too

                  Regards

                    Hello Ekann,

                    Thanks for your reply.

We have worked with FXCM and they are aware of the limited data and speed.
They are working at upgrading their servers to resolve this.
Unfortunately there is not an available ETA on this.

FXCM -Limited historical data and data gaps -solution??

                      Hi,

when will the issue with limited historical data and data gaps be solved?
                      What's the problem??
They are working on this issue for more than 7 months!
Since I trade directly from the charts, it's very time consuming to check for gaps and other "display errors"! I don't want to spend most of the time with "data validation", I just want to trade!
Is it possible to keep the NT7 users updated on this issue?

                      Thank you in advance!

                      Best regards
                      Andy

I find this quite bizarre as FXCM supply the data for the Kinetick FX data feed. How can they supply Kinetick with data but not their own feed??? Or is there a conflict of interest?

IMHO Kinetick charges far too much for Forex data. With MT4 offering free charting and data, albeit with less flexibility than Ninja, it really does seem expensive; especially for those simply wanting to paper trade and backtest.

Please sort this out: this year would be nice...

                          Hello,

We do not have an ETA on when there will be more resources available for the FXCM servers. We will update users as we have more information however this is nothing we can add at this time.

Kinetick uses their own resources to host and distribute this data. As they are a premium data service, they have more resources to host more historical data as well as offering more a faster load time. These are just some of the benefits included with the cost of a premium data feed.

However we do understand your concerns and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Thank you for explaining Matthew. Faster load times and more historical data are definitely a bonus. Cheers
