    Index with volume

    Hello,

the Stock indexes like Nasdaq 100, Comp, DJII are displayed without volume, because they are not tradeable, However, is it possible to get the sum of volumes of the underlying stocks?

    Regards

    Thomas

    Hello Thomas,

Can you please tell me to what connectivity provider you connect in NinjaTrader.

NinjaTrader will load the VOL indicator as per the data that is loaded from the connected data feed. As far as I know, none of the supported connectivity providers provide the sum of volumes of underlying stocks as per volume data for indices.

      Hello Jason,

I would like to use distribution days (high volume, low price action) of the market as EOD indicator. On several charting sites the indexes are accomplished by the volume. Is a possibility to get this for the Nasaq Comp, Nasdaq 100, DJII and S&P 500? I tried this with Kinetics EOS, Yahoo and Google.

      Best Regards

      Thomas

        Hello,

        Thanks for the note.

Unfortunately not possible, however what you could do is get the futures contract volume.

ES ##-## then add a VOL indicator will display futures volume.

djia volume shows at yahoo finance

you can see the DJIA volume at yahoo finance website, I guess there must a way to calculate and show on the chart. Even i connected with Yahoo , the djia volume on one minute chart were flat on Ninjatrader platform. see attachment please.
the volume on sp500 one minute chart looks normal though, why is there a difference between those two? see attachment please
          could you explain, please?

An index just is an index. It is calculated from different bits and pieces and does not reflect any trade transactions. As an index cannot be traded, there cannot be transaction volume.

If you find index data with volume added, then you need to find out what the volume represents. For example it could be

              - the aggregate volume of the underlying shares
              - the volume of the current front month futures contract
              - the aggregate volume of several futures contracts

Please ask your data provider what this volume is about. An index does not come with volume.
