does the amber connection indicator come on when either the historical or price feed is disconnected and red when both?

when there is a disconnection at what frequency does the client try and reconnect to the server and can this be altered?

when i get a disconnect it seems to stay that way a long time and seems better to disconnect and reconnect which goes green straight away?

if the historical server only is disconnected can i still place orders?

Correct when the Connection state is Orange this indicates you do not have a full connection and you have been disconnected from the Price server or the Order server. When the connection is Red this indicates you have lost connection to both.

A connection state between NinjaTrader and your broker/market data vendor is not dictated by NinjaTrader. The NinjaTrader application only reports the connection state as it is reported by the API you are connected through. NinjaTrader behaves like a radio receiver in that it receives signals from the connected server. If the signals are not coming through, the underlying broker/market data vendor API reports this to the NinjaTrader application which in turn reports this back to you. Once a loss of connection is reported, NinjaTrader or the underlying API will continuously try to re-establish a connection.
Common reasons that contribute to connection stability are:

• ISP issues
• Hardware firewall changing IP addresses frequently
• Dynamic IP addresses changing frequently intraday. Usually this happens once a week but you may want to check with your ISP. If they do change daily, requesting a static IP address may help.
• Broker/market data servers may be experiencing temporary downtime

I would not suggest submitting orders unless you have a full connection within NinjaTrader.

the log shows connections to "price feed" and "ninja trader data server" is the order server part of price feed or another connection?

The order server will be combined however use different ports.

if i pull the ethernet cable out it takes about 30 secs to indicate connection lost and when i replace the cable over a minute to reconnect, disconnecting and reconnecting manually is quicker. the point being that NT makes a mountain out of a momentary loss of connection, it doesnt seem to be polling the connection very frequently.

can it be configured?

There are no settings currently available within NinjaTrader that can be configured by the end user to make the reconnection process faster.
