Backfill with IB / volume charts

This is probably a beginners question since I am new to NT (though familiar with a range of other trading applications).
Anyway a search in the forum for "constant volume" did not produce really helpful posts.

(trying this on NT version 7.0.0.22, .NET/CLR Version: 2.0.50727.4206)

Data provider is in this case Interactive Brokers (IB) TWS.
(Build 913.6, Dec 17, 2010 Java Version: 1.6.0_22)

This works smoothly as long as I go:
File > New > Chart
selecting YM 03-11 contract, press "New", leave "Period" as 1 minute.
Then NT says "Loading data" and shows the appropriate data after a short while.


Same procedure is NOT working if I try one of the following:
- Select a smaller timeframe for YM (e.g. 30 seconds)
- Try to build volume bars (select "Period=Volume" then choose some size, whatever 10 or 1000 contracts)

In none of the last two conditions I get a message "Loading data" neither do I get an error message.

What's the problem?
How can I build volume charts in NT?

With respect to Interactive Brokers’ TWS, you will need to download & install the NinjaTrader-supported version (911). This is available from the Interactive Brokers connection guide here: link
