This particular issue was caused by our hosting service. As a result not all customer licenses could be verified and requests for historical data failed. We installed a work around until the hosting services resolves the issue. However, installing the fix caused a downtime (of the recorder) for 1-2 minutes.
A network - as you suggested - would not have made any difference, since all our servers had been impacted by that failure.
