For vrsn 6.5, is there a way to use the extranel data feed to run a backtest? If not how about vrsn 7? I would like to be able to save a chart with the trades for future reference.

Unfortunately this is not supported. You can run backtests in the Strategy Analyzer as per the link below.
It will use the historical data that is available.
This will not be supported in NinjaTrader 7 either.
You can save/load your backtest results in the Strategy Analyzer using the two icons in the upper left corner.
