I'm a little confused on how ECN's come into play when placing trades...

If I'm using NT / Zen / Amp, which ECN would be used to place trades?

Hello,

NT connects to Zen-fire which is streamed to NT via your borker. That stream has two servers, one for incoming data and one for outgoing data (orders). The ECN is your broker, if the broker is an ECN. You will need to contact them for details on exactly how they define themselves.

NT is just a software program that allows you to make trades and do analysis much better than your broker would allow for. We provider state of the art functionality and your broker provides the data and handles the orders once they get to the broker.
