A friend of mine is a subscriber to interactive brokers and want's to test out NT on the sim with IB data. I'm trying to setup a connection on his NT but it's not connecting. Do I have to pay for the live network key to run live IB data in the simulated account?

No, you can connect to IB using the free version of NinjaTrader as well.
Do you receive an error message when attempting to connect? If so, what does the message report?
