Yahoo data feed: Why can't I just enter any valid symbol?

There appears to be a two step process when there should only be one.

1) Add new symbol from File menu
2) THEN open up chart and enter in new symbol

Why can't I just skip step 1?

I am sorry I don't understand what you mean.

You build a default list then that list is available within NT.

Or you can add on-the-fly:
- Open a DOM
- Type the symbol of the instrument into the instrument field
- Press Enter on your keyboard. This adds the instrument to your master list in the Instrument Manager, it is call on-the-fly.
- Now follow this link to add the instrument your Default list:
