    Where better to apply strategies

Where better to apply strategies ?

    A) If I apply my strategy in the strategy tab - I am not able to check or manipulate strategy parameters once the strategy is started - I would have to attach a fresh strategy and go through all (a lot) of my strategy parameter again.

    - this is very annoying because we can not save strategy parameter.

    B) If I apply my strategy to a chart I am able to manipulate/correct strategy parameters later. But then I have to deal with performance problems because of Bars/Days back issues (e.g. sometimes the strategy simply does not take trades after a while)

    - this is annoying too.

Which approach does NT recommend ? Which do other users use ?

You will have to pick your poison...Both approaches as you have outlined have pros/cons. In NT7, we will introduce strategy persistence which allows you to stop/start, shut down NT, restart and they will still be there.

      NinjaTrader_Ray,

      ty for your reply.
(good to see you have irony left )

If I choose to apply to Chart: should I set "Display update interval (sec)" to "0" ???

A value of zero would update the chart on each incoming tick. If you would enter a value of 2, the chart will only update each two seconds.

          the implied question is:

should I set it to 0 if I attach a strategy to a chart ?

Would there be a difference in the execution of a strategy if I apply it to a chart an set the value to 100

          - compared to a strategy applied to the control center

If suggest to set it to zero, so your strategy conditions are calculated on each incoming tick.

I would like a second opinion on this issue, as it could have a significant impact on strategy performance.
I had always thought that there was no dependency between the chart update interval, and 'OnBarUpdate' within a strategy. The reply from Jason tells us that we should set 'Display update interval' to zero in order to ensure the strategy is updated immediately each tick. I am concerned here with a strategy running with CalculateOnBarClose=false.

                  MJT,

To clarify, it should not matter which setting you use. If you have a delay there will be a perceived delay. Under the hood everything is still running though. If you just set it to 0 though it may be easier to comprehend and that is why Jason suggested it.

                    Josh,

I am not certain if this question applies to this thread (great thread though).

I am testing using Replay Data. I am starting the strategy under CC Strategy tab and also on the chart. Same strategy. I am testing using a slightly modified version of the sample MA crossover strategy. So if crossover long, get long, if short get short. I set to if historical then return (hence I am testing realtime) and also not to calc on bar close.

                    1. If I start the strategy in the chart it doesn't fire a trade right away as the crossover has already taken place before the strategy was started. This is what I would expect.

                    2. If i place it in the tab, as soon as the replay is started (first bar for the session closes), it fires a trade. It should not do this according to my understanding.

What am I missing. Is there a good read about chart strat, verses tab strat?

Also, where can I read more info about updating a strategy on my chart once the strat has started. What are the laws/rules for this concept as I find it very helpful. But I am a bit timid as the early posts lead me to believe it's a tad flaky.

                    Please advise,

                      r2kTrader,

If you attach your strategy to a chart, not to the control center, you can re-access the strategy setup window ( the one you saw then you attached the strategy) via left click on the chart the strat. is attached to.
