Hi Mike (ctrlbrk),
I am using TWS for several years now togehter with other brokers and at a first glance your problems seem Windows or Java related. Seems to be an ActivX or Socket problem that disturbs the connectivity between NT and TWS.
Why don't you try on a seperate standard laptop with fresh Vista install and latest java version 1.6.11 and latest TWS version installed?
By the way, your forum name implies that you are used to computer problems, so may you have to change your approach to the computers. (Same with the markets, it is always us who have to change approach to the market, it is never the market to adapt to what is comfortabel for me)
You are reporting connection problems of TWS, and in my oppinion connection stability is a strong point for TWS.
In the past and still now some days I am using a portable laptop (Thinkpad T60 with Vista, and Raon Everun with XP, latest java , latest TWS, all Windows updates) and I am trading futures while sitting in the train. The connection is then via a mobile phone using UMTS and GPRS. As you can immagine this connection is not very reliable and in fact it happens quite frequently that the Internet connection is interrupted and the dialup modem dials again to reestablish a connection.
Do you know what? I keep TWS open all the time, and as soon as the internet is available again TWS will reconnect. TWS will not ask for login (neither for challenge/response) in these occasions. It is only necessary to keep the TWS application running all the time.
I even did a rougher test a few times: With TWS running and connected I put the laptop in hibernation. Then I waited 1 hour , and I turned the laptop on again (wakeup from hibernation). Then I have to dialup to the internet again , manually, and once internet is connected again TWS will connect also and keep on running.
With NT I also connect to a PATS system broker at the same time and also there the reconnection after reestablishing internet again works. I did not try the hibernation though with NT on top of TWS or PATS.
This experience makes me believe that TWS is a very reliable software.
Offcourse I had problems in the past , but these problems were usually related to faulty windows drivers (bad modem drivers that don't release the com ports) or a messed up windows installation.
My philosophy is also a thinly loaded Windows, hence only a simple antivirus and for that reason I use the IB data service also. In my oppinion using a third software for stock market data like E-signal and the like together with TWS and NT will only increase the potential for whatsoever sort of software conflicts.
I hope this info helps.
Good luck
Andreas
