RE: Bid ask orders on expired months

Hi,

I was looking at crude oil's previous months contract today.. CL 10-17. Just had a few questions regarding the bid and ask. I noticed that there usually still buy and sell orders going on, on the month before front month contract. Can you explain why there are still orders going on and is it pertinent information or not? Thank you for your help in advance!

Thanks for writing in to our Support team.

After the suggested rollover date, previous contracts are still active until the settlement date. Today is the settlement date for the CL, so at the end of the day today no one will be trading the CL 10-17 contract. Older contracts will still typically be trading after the rollover date and prior to the settlement date.
