Actually I never did find the problem -- it just mysteriously vanished. I am never comfortable when that happens, but since I can no longer reproduce the problem I'm moving on and just hoping it does not re-appear later.

I have seen the same problem in other contexts. The problem is that the system gets to creating new objects and initializing them by setting properties. In certain cases initialization by setting properties causes big problems. I still do not know how to write code that avoids such issues.
