What is the ninjascript (this) used for?

I have seen the following example on several occasions:

minimum = new DataSeries(this);
maximum = new DataSeries(this);

What is the function of "(this)"?

The "this" refers to the parent object. In the case of these calls, it passes the indicator object to the data series constructor.
