What is the formula used for ATR indicator

    Hi,

I am not a programmer. ATR is one of the few indicators that I use in my charts. I am wondering, what is the formula that you use to calculate the ATR indicator that you make available. There is the original Welles Wilder Formula, but there have been many other iterations over the years.

    Thanks.

Welcome to our forums, you can take a look here - http://www.ninjatrader.com/support/h..._range_atr.htm

If you're interested in the underlying NinjaScript source that can be viewed as well by going to Tools > Edit NinjaScript indicator > ATR.

      Thank You.

From what I understand, it is a simple average of true ranges; nothing like the original Welles Wilder formula.

No, this is not just smoothed by a regular SMA, but the enhancement Wilder added as explained in the Stockcharts article.
