What are the "best" or most used indicators of economic development

I'm trying to link the relationship between FDI with economic growth and economic development in USA.

As a robust approach I wanted to do a linear regression between FDI inflows and GDP to find how does FDI relates to economic growth but, is there an indicator published by an international organization that measures the economic growth of a contry? Or which indicators are typically used to describe economic development? (In this case to use it for a linear regression model).

So I understand correctly, you are trying to design an indicator that tells you GDP so you can plot it on a chart?

This would be possible if you have a data source the gives GDP with timestamps so you could import that data, for example, with a StreamReader so you can then plot the data.
