Merge policy application

When is the Merge policy applied in NinjaTrader?
(I mean the Tools > Options > Data tab > Merge policy)

• a) Each time when Chart is opened? (that means, that I change the settings and open another chart, it applies the different merge policy?)
• b) OR Only once when data are downloaded into cache? (that means I have to reload all data to applie the different merge policy)
