How do I copy a basic indicator, so that I might customize some of the values without losing the original indicator

Open the indicator (Tools > Edit NinjaScript) then in the NinjaScript Editor, right click and select "Save As..." and provide a new name.

Yes, when applying an indicator to a chart, set the parameter "Calculate on bar close" to a value of false
