alert sounds - synch or asynch?

Hi

I have made some alert sounds I want to attach to one of my scripts.

Thing is, I don't know if alert sounds are played synchronously or asynchronously. Mine are longer than a beep and although less than 2 seconds, I can't really have them on if they are played synchronously.
