Not really programming, but can you direct me to some documentation that can (for instance) set an alert when the 100 and 200 SMA's cross in a particular market?

Yes, it's possible to create MA crossover alerts. You can use the strategy wizard to create this in a point and click interface without custom programming. The strategy wizard links with NinjaScript, so you can see the resulting code from creating these conditions.

I also put together this indicator, which allows you to define moving average crossovers in the indicators parameters, as well as actions to take when they trigger.
