What programming language?

I'm new to programming, and I need to learn basic programming concepts. Could you recommend some references for the relevant programming language?

I found C# for Dummies (2008 version) quite good as a basic primer.
Its then best to download some of the sample code on this forum and play around with it so that the ideas in the book can be embedded in the memory!

As a non programmer ( no computers at my school!) it is logical but frustrating - learning C# is a long process but ultimately , I hope, rewarding.

I have been learning it now for approx 3- 4 months and I reckon it needs another year to become half competent.
