Strategies disappear

    Strategies disappear

    Guys-

    I have run into this problem more times than I can remember, and I'd like to know what's going on:

    Strategies, in the strategies tab, can regularly disappear (be overwritten? Erased? who knows).

    Recently, I removed all of my strategies and saved the workspace as "EmptyStrategy" workspace. I did this to get around another limitation of NinjaTrader, which is that you need to remove strategies from the strategy tab in order to remove associated executions.

    After doing this (removing my strategies and removing my executions), I exited NT, saving my "Empty Strategy" workspace.

    When I re-loaded NT, I proceeded to load up my original workspace with all my strategies and - guess what - they're all gone. I went to load up my backup workspace (I always make backups because this is not an infrequent occurance) and THEY were all gone as well (even though the file never indicated that it was changed, etc).

    I cannot find my strategies anywhere. They are literally gone. Right now, I'm praying that they're still in the backup I created Saturday night, but right now I fear everything is gone.

    Guys, why do strategies disappear from the strategies tab?

    Thanks for your post.

    Please keep in mind that strategies are saved in the database file. The workspace will have a strategy ID associated with a chart if the strategy is applied to a chart. If we close a chart that has a strategy applied to it, it will be delisted from the Strategies tab and will also be removed as a configured strategy in the database file. If we have removed the strategies, we would have removed them from the configured strategies in the database.

    I would suggest the following procedure:

    1. Set up strategies on your charts in your workspace
    2. Save the workspace
    3. Create a new workspace called "Empty Strategies"
    4. Then save the workspace.
    5. Test closing the workspace that has the strategies applied. We should see the strategies will be delisted, but they would still be configured in the database.
    6. Test opening your original workspace, we should be met with the strategies again, because they have not been removed.

    I did this to get around another limitation of NinjaTrader, which is that you need to remove strategies from the strategy tab in order to remove associated executions.
    I'm not quite sure on the limitation you are referring to, could you clarify? Executions are stored in the database, and we will still see daily executions that were made by the strategy in the Executions tab of the Control Center.

    Could you attach a screenshot to show me?

    Alternatively to send a screenshot press Alt + PRINT SCREEN to take a screenshot of the selected window. Then go to Start--> Accessories--> Paint, and press CTRL + V to paste the image. Lastly, save as a jpeg file and send the file as an attachment.

      Was this issue ever resolved or did it resurface. I have a workspace with 6 charts

      MES 1 Min, with 3 strategies loaded on the chart
      MNQ 1 Min, with 3 strategies loaded on the chart
      MCL 1 Min, with 3 strategies loaded on the chart
      MES 8 Min, with 1 strategies loaded on the chart
      MNQ 8 Min, with 1 strategies loaded on the chart
      MCL 3 Min, with 1 strategies loaded on the chart

      So during the day I have 12 Strategies running and trading.

      What I find is that if I save the workspace and then close it, upon re-opening the workspace all of my strategies are GONE and need to be reloaded and reconfigured.


      This takes so much time. Looking to know why the strategies will not save in the workspace even after saving the worspace before closing it.

      This is so frustrating needingh to reconfigure these 12 strategies and charts ALL THE TIME!

        Are the charts remaining open when the workspace is restored?

        Are there errors on the Log tab of the Control Center when the workspace is restored?

          When I reopen the workspace, all of my charts reopen as I would expect, however all of the strategies I had loaded and was working with prior to saving and closing the workspace are gone.

          I do not see any related errors in the error log.

            May I confirm you are using 8.1.3.1 and not an out of date release of NinjaTrader Desktop?

            The strategy is not being removed from the chart, is this correct?

            The strategy does not appear on the Strategies tab of the Control Center when the workspace is restored?

            Please close all open workspaces, and in a new blank workspace open a new chart with no indicators and apply only the SampleMACrossover then save the workspace, close the workspace, and re-open the workspace. Can the behavior be reproduced with the SampleMACrossover?

              The version I am running is 3.1.3.1 64bit

              To clarify the problem, the strategies are being removed from my charts and all need to be re added.

              I biproduct of the strategies being removed is that I no longer see them in the strategies window (That is how I am alerted to the fact that they have been removed)

                  I have been continuing to try and troubleshoot this and think I might have determined where the bug is.

                  I was able to create a new chart and save the MACDCross over as you asked. The problem however was not with Indicators it was with the strategies.
                  I continued to see if I could replicate the issue by closing the workspace and reopening it, but the strategies stayed as expected.

                  I then attempted to download a prior day (today - 8/26/2024). I never closed out of the workspace.

                  With the workspace already open and connected to Ninja trader, I downloaded the MES data I wanted to replay.
                  I then connected to the Playback Connection (but could not enable the strategies - Greyed Out)
                  I then went into each chart and change the Account under Setup from SIM101 to Playback on each strategy I had loaded on the charts
                  I was then able to enable each strategy and replayed the day.
                  When I disconnected from the Playback, all the strategies are gone, and they need to be reloaded again.

                  Is this the expected behavior or something that can be fixed?

                    Just to confirm, you have tested the SampleMACrossover strategy included with NinjaTrader in the workspace, is this correct?

                    I was not aware you were connecting to the playback.
                    While the strategy should still be saved with the workspace, a strategy enabled on playback can only be enabled when connected to the Playback connection.

                    Any strategy enabled with a different account cannot be enabled in playback. You will need to add an additional instance of the strategy while connected to the Playback connection and select the Playback account. (The strategies enabled on different accounts can remain disabled, so that these can be enabled when connected to that account)

                    This is not the behavior I am seeing on my end. Below is a link to a video.


                    Using the exact steps as shown in the video using the SampleMACrossover strategy included with NinjaTrader is the behavior on your end different?
