Why do you need to be connected to run backtest?

I'm I'm backtesting against data that is cached, why does NT need to be connected to the broker to run the strategy backtest?

To get check if there are any new data you are missing. If you know you already have the most up-to-date cache or if you already have data that you want to use just don't connect to your brokerage when you are backtesting.

I can't add a strategy to a chart unless I am connected. The little $ icon is greyed out. Is there another way?

Use the Strategy Analyzer for backtesting. If you still want to use it on a chart connect to the External Data Feed instead.
