B4 Lack of feedback on bad symbol enry to chart

A short screencast is at http://screencast.com/t/FEbnWDNjF

Entering a bad symbol (TICK instead of ^TICK) seems to hang the chart for a while, with no visible feedback about what is (or is not) happening.

    Thanks,
    Dale

    Hello dalebru,

    Thank you for your post.

Can you please connect to your data provider and let me know if you then receive a message when TICK is selected.

      1. Connected to Kinetick.
      2. Selected TICK
      3. Got an error dialog box: "Unable to load historical data: unknown instrument 'TICK'"

I have submitted your suggestion to our development team for a message to be displayed when disconnected as well and will follow up as soon as a tracking number has been assigned.

I'd like to get a bit of clarification on this one, if I could, so I can be specific in logging the suggestion. The behavior that you are currently seeing comes from the existing feature of the platform automatically creating a new equity instrument when an unrecognized symbol is entered into a chart.

Since the platform would not be able to know whether you intended to create a new stock symbol, or were making a mistake, I'd like to get your thoughts on how this could be mitigated. Would you rather see an option to disable the automatic creation of a stock instrument, for example, or possibly display a popup message verifying whether you wanted to create a symbol or had just made a mistake?

I had no visual feedback at all, and there was no way for me to know that I had "created a symbol."
Ideally (in my opinion) the system would pop a dialog something like "Unknown symbol - Create new one?"
Even a Log entry would be helpful, like "New Stock Symbol xxxx" created.
I just now created a symbol that way, named "TEST". I see you assume it is a Stock on the Default exchange, tick size 0.01 and RTH. All of those are just assumptions. Perhaps the user should/could be "guided" to Tools + Instruments + Edit-TEST to fix the new symbol setup.

Thank you, I can see the value in something like that. I'll go ahead and log the suggestion so we can begin to track demand. (SFT-667)
