Program reports that it cannot be installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 (x64) Datacenter edition.

You need to install the .Net 4.5 feature, see http://screencast.com/t/ERqGpCvtIf .
Then it will work (just like you had to install the .Net 3.5 feature on Windows 2008 R2 for NinjaTrader 7).

This is correct, you will need to make sure you have the minimum PC Requirements as detailed in the NinjaTrader 8 Help Guide.
