Unable to install. Installer throws error

Isntalling NT7 on my developer image throws an error with rollback.

Install runs through, then the error is:

    --->
An error occured while attempting to create the directory:
    \\company.local\dfs\Services\Homes\myusername\My Documents\NinjaTrader 7
    <--

Note: I changed the domain name and username.

There is no further information in the event log. Thanks to you not exposing the MSI to me, I so far has been unable to instruct msiexec to write a detailed log file.

Note: corporqate policy redirects the user's home directory to a DFS managed network share. Your software so far is the only one having an issue with it.

If you can tell me how to get access to the MSI, I can have it run an install creating a verbose log, then you can try nailing down the error further.

    Hello,

Thank you for you forum post.

Unfortunately due to your My Documents folder being on a network drive or mapped share this is not supported now in NinjaTrader 7. There was a workaround to allow this in NinjaTrader 6.5 however that method no longer works with NinjaTrader 7 due to the SQL database. To allow NinjaTrader 7 to install and run correctly you will unfortunately have to relocate the My Documents folder back on the PC as this folder is not changeable in the installation process and the settings for NinjaTrader must reside in the My Documents folder.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Any intentions of actually fixxing the broken installer? Folder redirection WAS a standard enterprise feature years ago in XP, and now in Windows 7 it is even a full end user supported feature (as in: you can redirect folders directly from the properties, which was not possible earlier).

This is painfull, and at the end of the day it is probably just a stupid little programming mistake in a custom action of yours that would take possibly jus tan hour or two to fix.

For me it looks like the only way will be to remove the redirect directory (which will affect the whole company), log in (so the folder is pulled down locally), install NT7 and then - again - push out the redirect directory.

And before you ask - the reason the directive is there is because we simply DO NOT BACK UP workstations at all.

So, please fix it. Should not take a lot of time.

And, as a last note - WHY THE HELL IS THE USER DATABASE IN THE USERS DOCUMENTS FOLDER? I assume - developer unable to read documentation? MS is very clear - this folder is not for program databases. There is a SEPARATE (!) folder for this, APPLICATION DATA. The SQL Database should be in the user's specific application data folder (as should, btw, all the other elements you mass-create - like prices, download etc... pretty much the only content that should be in the My Documents are indicators and strategies).

        Hello,

Unfortunately even if you did get it installed correctly you will run into issues with NinjaTrader running if you push the My Documents folder back to a mapped network drive as we have tested this and found there is an issue with connecting to a SQL database across a mapped network drive/network resource that currently does not allow NinjaTrader 7 to be supported with a redirected My Documents folder on another PC. Development is aware of the issue and as such this configuration is not supported to run NinjaTrader 7 currently.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

So why is there a DATABASE in the MY DOCUMENTS folder?
          ....
NinjaTrader_Dierk: Removed insult. Please stick to forum rules. Thanks
          ...

The DATABASE should be in the user specific application data folder and has no freaking right (besides incompetence) to live in the MyDocuments folder.

If you can not deal with roaming (app data wise), then it should go into the LOCAL APPLICATION DATA folder.

I is not like Microsoft has not foreseen that a LONG time ago and created all kinds of nice locations.

          Point your developer to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/...01/434647.aspx.

And no - no excuse. This is like - hm - 10 years old now, as a standard.
