Duplicate data series criteria should include session template

I was running an ES 5-min RTH-session chart with some indicators. I decided to change it to an ETH-session chart, but I still wanted indicators based on the RTH session. I had the absolutely brilliant idea to combine an ES 5-min ETH chart and an ES 5-min RTH chart in a single panel with the RTH data rendered transparent, the plan being to then insert indicators based on the RTH data. Unfortunately Ninja would not allow me to have two ES 5-min data series.

I can have an ES 5-min ETH data series plus an ES 1-min RTH data series. I can have an ES 5-min ETH data series plus a 5-min ETH data series from another instrument. But I can't have ES 5-min ETH and ES 5-min RTH? The data are different! So those are different data series! I shouldn't get an error unless it's the same instrument, same timeframe and same session template.

I know this impacts the Input Series window for choosing the data series for an indicator. Nevertheless, my original idea was not particularly far-fetched, and I should be able to do it.

    Hello,

Thank you for your forum post.

This should be possible. You must first create the chart with one ES data series then once the chart is created you can then add another ES data series too it.

Let me know if you cant do this.

      Not possible

If, right from the start, you create a chart, add the ES 09-10 data series twice and set both data series to Type=Minute, Value=5 and Panel=1, then set the first data series to Session template=CME US Index Futures ETH and set the second data series to Session template=CME US Index Futures RTH, you get an error message.

However, if you create a chart with the ES 09-10 data series added only once with Type=Minute, Value=5, Panel=1 and Session template=CME US Index Futures ETH and then the chart is allowed to display, if you go back and add the ES 09-10 data series again with Type=Minute, Value=5, Panel=1 and Session template=CME US Index Futures RTH, you get an error message.

So I guess the only question is, Do you want the error message immediately, or later?

(The issue, BTW, is not adding the second ES data series. If the second series were a 1-minute series rather than a 5-minute series it works fine. The issue is that Ninja won't let you add a second 5-minute series when the primary series is also a 5-minute series. My contention is that the session template should also be considered when determining whether or not a duplicate data series is being added. 5-min RTH is not the same as 5-min ETH.)

        Hello,

        Thanks for the clarification.

Understood I recieve the same error, the key is using the same type and interval settings. I will check with development on this however this most likely is a limitation.

Oh yeah, as soon as it happened it was pretty clear to me that it was by design, that Ninja does not want to allow duplicate data series in a chart. And frankly that seems quite reasonable to me. However, I would contend that a data series is not the same as another data series unless it contains the same data. (Put that way it's pretty obvious, ain't it?) And a data series based on an RTH template will never contain the same data as a data series based on an ETH template! So I still think I should be able to combine those on a chart, even if the type and interval are the same.

            Hello,

I have sent a note to development and let you know on the clarification I receive. However the data series is in fact the same data series, however internally before plotting to the chart we hide bars based on the session template. So you are still using data from the database that constitues a 5 minute ES 09-10 chart just your are hiding different parts of it based on the session template used. Based on where the limitation is for this may or may not be possible currently.
