Problem with B17 install

    Problem with B17 install

    I was using B16 with no problems. I installed B17 a few minutes ago and then opened NT. When NT opened, it opened to my workspace called "current" but instead of having 20 charts showing, it now only shows 1 chart.

    Since I always seem to have problems when I upgrade from one beta to the next, before I upgraded, I created a backup. I also created a copy of my existing workspace and called it "current - backup". When I went to open that "current - backup" workspace, it also only had 1 chart in it.

    Is there a way that you can take a look at my workspace and tell if you see 20 charts or 1 chart?

    Should I try to restore the backup that I created right before I installed B17?
    Should I somehow delete or uninstall B17 and go back to B16?

    Please advise.

    Edit... I couldn't figure out how to attach my workspace to this support thread so I sent an email thru NT with my workspace, and almost everything else checked also.

    Edit #2 - It's taking a long time for ninja to zip the file to send the email. Maybe I'm trying to send you too much info. Here is a screenshot of what my control center. Notice what it is telling me in the bottom right corner.

    Todd, how did you back up the files? If you did it through the File -> Utilities -> Backup menu, go ahead and try restoring that backup file.

    Did you see the release notes for this release about the special installation instructions?

    Another option when updating your NinjaTrader installation is to backup the files independently (from <My Docs>/NinjaTrader 7/workspace in your case) and then restore the files after the installation is completed.

    I didn't see your email come in yet, but to attach files, you just have to click on the little paper clip icon in the response editor which brings up a window. In that window you have to select the file, click upload, and then you can submit your reply without any additional steps.

    EDIT: From the screenshot you've provided it looks like you select all the historical data as well. That takes a while to zip up and even longer to send over the internet.

      Austin,

      NT is still preparing the email that I sent. Hopefully it will send soon. I tried to abort because it's taking forever but when I clicked abort in the bottom right corner of the control center, it just "beeped" at me and did not abort.

      My understanding of the release notes was - if you are moving from B16 to B17 then just download and install the Setup file for B17. Is that correct? I think the special instructions were for people who had not installed B16. Is that correct? Were there other instructions that you are referring to?

      Yes, I backed up ninja using the Utilties - backup function.

      I tried to attach the workspace folder to my initial post in this thread but I don't think that file extension is allowed. Maybe I'm wrong about that but it didn't seem to want to attach.

      edit - I finally just stopped NT using the windows task manager and then restarted nt and sent the email without chart data and without the db file. Please let me know if you get it. Also, I'm restoring the backup that I created.

        Todd, my apologies, you are correct. Last time I upgraded I went from B15 -> B17 because I had roughly a month off; that is where the confusion came from.

        You can Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill NinjaTrader if it is taking long to zip it all up because it could take hours to upload all the information if all the boxes were checked.

        Go ahead and try to restore your back up and see if that works. Also, you can right-click on the workspace file and then send it to a .zip archive and attach that. I will test it out for you as soon as I receive it.

          I'm restoring the backup. It says 5 minutes remaining. I'm praying hard that this will all be ok when it comes back up.

          I'll let you know.

            Just received your email.

            Workspace A - CURRENT just has one chart - 6B 30 min
            Workspace A - CURRENT BACKUP has the same single chart
            Workspace A - CURRENT ALT has 16 charts and one market analyzer window.
            Workspace A - CURRENT ALT 2 has 14 charts
            The default workspace won't open, but that file is regenerated as you save workspace when closing NT.

            So it looks like you have something to work with. Let us know if you have any other questions.

              I'm still waiting for the backup to restore but the workspace - "current" should have 20 charts and the workspace "current - backup" should have 23 charts.

              I'll let you know what I've got after the restore finishes.
              Is it normal for a restore to take about 15 minutes?

                Depending on how much information there is to restore, 15 minutes could be right in the ball park.

                Apparently something doesn't quite match up because I only got the charts I mentioned.

                  When you say "something doesn't match up"...
                  I also only have 1 chart in the B17 version of workspace "current". So we have the same thing.

                  However, when I closed out ninja earlier before I installed B17, I had 20 charts in that workspace which I'm hoping will magically show up again after this restore is done. The restore is still going. It says "elapsed time 23 minutes." When I click on Windows task manager, it says the control center is not responding but I'm not going to touch it. Hopefully it will finish in a minute or two.

                    The 16 charts to 20 charts is the mismatch I was speaking of. If you have just one chart and I just have one chart, then that is the information the workspace file contains. After the restore is finished, please let us know if your workspaces are properly restored.

                      The restore process finished. The workspaces both still showed 1 chart so I rebuilt a the workspace using my chart templates and then saved it as both names.

                      I wish I knew what caused that issue but it only took me about 5 minutes to rebuild the workspace which is not a big deal. The major problem would have been if the chart templates were gone.

                      Anyway, for now things seem to be working fine. I'll let you know if I have other problems.

                        Thanks for the update, Todd. In the future, before you update, you can manually move the workspace files to another location and then move them back after the update to guarantee the data is there. The backup/restore/migrate process can be finicky as you've noticed.
