    Metastock import error message

I have tried to import Metastock data and get an error. There is not a lot of info on the subject in help and am not quite sure if I am doing it correctly. In NT7 I go to Historical Data Manager, select Metastock format and Start Import. All of the MS data files are in the name format of:

    EMASTER
    MASTER
    XMASTER
    Fnnnn.DAT
    Fnnnn.MWD

The import asks for a Metastock Masterfile, but when I navigate to my MS data folder and select MASTER (the only file it sees), I get the following error.

    Hello snaphook,

Could you please upload the MetaStock files you try to import so we can test it on our end.

      MS Files Upload

Here is a portion of the folder including all the MASTER files and a few .DAT and .MWD files. There are over 6k files in the folder.

Can you please send the entire folder. When I try to import the master file using the folder you uploaded, NinjaTrader becomes unresponsive.

Please tell me what NinjaTrader beta version you have installed as well. You can check this at Help-->About.

Importing MetaStock data should work. When I tested the folder included at the forum thead below, I was able to import MetaStock as expected.

          Sample Folder

Here is the Sample folder provided by MS. Much smaller and gave me the same error. I am on beta 15.

Well maybe not. It zipped to 1.6 mb which is over the size limit.

            snaphook,

Unfortunately symbol names with #s are currently not supported.

That is the way MS v8 stores data, so I guess NT7 won't import MS 8 historic data files, but only text files in MS format. Would that be a fair characterization? The .DAT and .MWD files are not even text files.

                snaphook,

NinjaTrader supports the .DAT files. I am not sure what the .MWD files are. Can you please clarify what those are in MetaStock? Thanks.

                  Hi snaphook !

The data files you provided contain a very huge amount of instruments (~6000). That makes NT unresponsive here (post #4).

Does the MetaStock import work 'ever' ? Means could you please try it with just a small sample, 2-3 instruments and only a few days data. Does the import to NinjaTrader work with this sample, or do you get the same error ?

Can you provide us with short with your PC spec, CPU, OS, memory ? You are already on NT7 beta 15 ?

                  Thanks,
                  Christian

On post #1: The error message would indicate that something went wrong on installing the Metastock components. Could you please try this:
                    - uninstall NT7 via control panel
                    - download and install NT7 again
may be that resolves the metastock registration issue...

                    Thanks

                      NT Josh

The best explanation I could find is:

Metastock stores historical stock data in files named Fxxx.DAT (where xxx=1..255) and Fxxxx.MWD (where xxxx=257..2000). Identifying which stock a "DAT" (or "MWD") file pertains to requires one of three symbol index files: MASTER, EMASTER, or XMASTER.
                      • MASTER and EMASTER are symbol index files that identify the 255 symbols held by each of the 255 Fxxx.DAT files (255 was the limit of earlier Metastock versions).

                        For example: F1.DAT, F2.DAT, F3.DAT, ... F255.DAT.
                      • XMASTER is Metastock's latest symbol index file (for versions 6.5x and later) that references the symbols held by the Fxxxx.MWD files. This facilitates storing more than 255 symbols in each directory.

                        For example: F257.MWD, F258.MWD, F259.MWD, ... F2000.MWD).

Unless you're dealing with a Metastock folder that was created by a very old version of the Metastock program, you will usually always find the XMASTER file present. If you do, then ignore the MASTER and EMASTER files and instead always load the XMASTER file.

I tried it on the sample data supplied by Metastock with the program and got the same error.

I removed all indexes from the sample so it contains just 35 symbols.

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled yet.

Please check if uninstalling/re-installing NinjaTrader 7 will solve the error. You will save all settings and data, since these are located at (My) Documents-->NinjaTrader 7. This folder remains unaffected upon uninstalling NinjaTrader 7 via the Control Panel.

                              snaphook,

Development talked to MetaLib about the COM class factory error you had. It seems that a DLL may not be registered on your machine properly and to fix this would require you to uninstall NT7 and reinstall it. This should fix the DLL registrations.
