    Charting: Trendlines & Others

    I would appreciate some assistance.

    1) When I draw a line on, say, the 30-minute chart and select "Attach to ALL charts" from the line property, that same line does not show up on the 5-minute chart. However, it does appear when I close and reopen the 5-minute chart.

    2) When I select "Attach to ALL charts" option and click on "Set Default" button, I assume this option applies to all other lines as well as all other chart. But whenever I draw another line on either the same chart or on a different chart of the same data series, why do I need to select this option again? What I want is to make this option PERMANENT, so that ALL lines drawn will appear globally across ALL charts. I draw a lot of lines and I don't want to waste time anymore than I need to.

    3) I like to use the "Global Crosshair" on all my charts but every time I open a new chart, it reverts back to the default setting: pointer mode. Is there a global setting?

    4) Same applies for the "Snap Mode". I prefer to leave the snap mode on (in NT7: Bar & Price) for all my charts, but I have to manually change this setting for every new chart I open since, by default, this option turned off. Is there a global setting?

    Hi saliva,

    Thank you for your post.

1.) On my end, the line is applied to my other chart automatically immediately after clicking OK.
    • Please try this again and scroll through the other chart to ensure that the line will not plot until you reload the chart.
    • If this is the case, please check which version of NT 7 you are using by clicking Help > About.

2.) Currently, this is expected behavior. I will, however, forward your comments on to my development team for further consideration. Thank you for your feedback!

3.) For this, you will want to use Chart Templates. After adding the Global Cross Hair, right click in your chart and select Templates > Save as Default.

After saving these settings as the default, all new charts will open with the Global Cross Hair applied.

4.) Chart templates will also take care of this setting.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

      I have 2 additional questions.

      1) When I have only one data series (eg. ES) on the chart, I'm able to freely scroll horizontally through the chart, both left and right. However, when I add another instrument like CL to the existing plot, namely ES and CL superimposed, I can only scroll to the left. How can I scroll to the right in order to expand the chart?

      2) In the Data Series box, you can save the configuration by right-clicking and selecting "Set 'Default' for Minute period Type." But as I was plotting one instrument over another instrument as explained in 1 above, I realized that I need more than one just template. Let me explain. When I'm looking solely at one instrument, I want a clean 5-minute Candlestick chart. However, when I have one instrument drawn over another, I prefer to use the Candlestick for the first instrument and the Box style for the other.

Currently, I'm adding the second instrument by directly typing its symbol in the chart (eg. +cl 06-10 5m), which bypasses the need for opening the Data Series box. I find this feature very useful but the downside is that it opens what's saved in the "default" setting, which is Candlestick. Hence I would then need to open the Data Series box to manually change from Candlestick to Box. As such, what's the point if I'm forced to go thorough it twice?

        Hi saliva,

1.) Please left click in the body of your chart and drag your mouse.

2.) I will forward your comments here on to my development team for further consideration.

          Thanks again.

Sorry for being a pest but I have two more minor requests.

          1) It's about the time markers on the x-axis at the bottom of the chart. Unlike other charting platforms that I used in the past, NT only stamps time up to the last bar. Should you take the cursor out to the right of the chart, however, time remains fixed (see Figure 1). Why is that? For me, it's crucial to forecast at what time in the future the price will hit the anticipated target. But this cannot be done with the way it is.

          2) Similarly, when I try to project a price targets in the future, I have hard time deciphering exactly where that is to occur. Suppose it is currently 11:00 AM and I believe the next reversal will occur in 20 minutes at 11:20 AM. Since I use the 5-minute chart, that's 4 bars or candles away from the current bar. I try to guess the distance by measuring the past 4 bars. But what a tedious task. And it probably ain't all that precise either.

This becomes especially problematic when I'm working with trendlines. For example, assume the price target is to occur in 20 minutes at some point on the nearby trendline. Not only do I need to move out by 20 minutes in time but now I need to scroll up or down to measure at what point it would occur on that trendline (see Figure 2). Therefore, I would like to request that the cursor be locked to the price bars. This way, as I move my mouse, the cursor moves 1 bar at a time, bar-by-bar.

I'd also like to attach all Draw Objects to different charts of on instrument at once. This should be an option to configure!

                  Hello symphys,

                  Thank you for your post.

                  This option is already available.

Please double click on the drawing object you would like to apply to all charts to open its Properties menu.
In the Properties menu, set the 'Attach To' drop-down menu to '**INSTRUMENT**(All Charts)", then click OK.

Please see the attached image for an example from the Line Properties menu.

I mean that for any new object it will attach to all charts. Right now I use F6 to insert a line and then need to manually select "All charts".

If I click on set default NT does not save the "all charts" as default.

                      Hi symphys,

After making the change to '(all charts)', please press the Set Default button.
The object should now perform as you desire.

Does not work. Here is what I do, with 3 charts open:

                        Press F6
                        Place line in chart
                        Doubleclick on it -> Properties
Change Attach to: ES 06-10 (All charts)
                        Press Set Default
OK, This line does now appear in all charts
                        Delete line
Press F6 again, new line will not display in all charts and has attach to also not set to all charts

                          Hi symphys,

Please excuse my confusion. It seems that this property cannot be set as the default. This is performing as expected currently.

I will forward a request for a change in this on to my development team for further consideration.

One problem that surfaced today I find mildly annoying.

Suppose I already have two charts open, 5- and 30-minute charts of CL respectively. Now I draw a trendline on the 30 minute chart with the "Attach to All Charts" selected.

That trendline should also appear on the 5-minute chart, but it doesn't. However, when I close and reopen the 5-minute chart again, I can see the trendline.

Hence, the problem arises only with the existing charts already opened on the desktop.

                            **edit**

It seems that this particular problem arises when I draw a trendline over many days (eg. 10 days or more). Shorter length doesn't cause this problem.

I was unable to reproduce this one with a ray line covering 20 days on CL 06-10. Can you please clarify? Thanks.
