Unable to migrate 6.5 to 7 - "MaxLocksPerFile exceeded"

I encounter a message indicating "MaxLocksPerFile exceeded" when the NT 7 post-install migration process runs.

The error message suggests I increase that limit. Current registry settings have MaxLocksPerFile=9500 which I assume is the default.

Any suggestions on an appropriate value for this setting in order to carry out the migration?

The 6.5 db was close to 2GB in size and had been "repaired" just prior to installing NT 7, if that has any bearing on anything ...

    Hi tradercat,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the NinjaTrader support forum.

Database size is almost definitely the issue here. I would suggest resetting the database in version 6.5 (to decrease database size) prior to migrating to NT 7.

To reset your database in version 6.5:
From the Control Center, click Tools > Options > Misc Tab > Reset DB.

By resetting the database, you will be removing the following:
    • Historical Orders
    • Historical Executions
    • Historical ATM Strategy data.

The following items will be retained in the database:
    • ATM Strategy Templates
    • Chart data

That's the thing - I don't want to lose historical data by resetting the DB, I will need to retain it in order to run future performance analysis including new NT 7 trades and previous NT 6.5 trades.

Any way to transfer this data manually if necessary? Or perhaps some other workaround?

      Thanks for any advice.

        Hi tradercat,

Before resetting the database, you could export the historical data via the Tools > Historical Data > Export menu.

Also, which data provider are you using?
Depending on what level of historical data your provider supports, you may be able to simply download a new copy of your historical data within version 7.

I should have specified that it was historical trade data that I wanted to keep - not the historical market data.

          fwiw data provider is Zen-Fire.

            tradercat,

To save historical trade data you will need to use the Backup Utility in File>Utilities>Backup. Please be sure to have the database one checked.

Thanks for replying promptly to my queries earlier.

Only challenge with using backup to save historical trade date is that NT 7 doesn't seem to like NT 6.5 backup format ...

                Hi tradercat,

If you were to remove historical data from your database in version 6.5 via the Tools > Historical Data > Delete menu, this may shrink the database to a small enough size for you to migrate in to version 7.

Also, I do want to mention that backing up in 6.5 and restoring in version 7 would not do the trick. Rather, you will need to use the migration utility that is loaded on the first start up of NT 7.
