    Fixed chart range

Just installed the new 7 beta 5 and was trying the charts fixed range. This is my top item I was looking forward to on NT (for the last couple of years) and perhaps I don't understand it. When I set it to fixed, it sets the upper and lower boundaries of the chart to a fixed number say $100 and $105. What I (and I think others) were looking for it to do was to set the Fixed to .25 per inch/cm (or whatever), so when you run the chart back or forward in time, the display would always show the same vertical scaling.

As it is now, scrolling either way more than a short amount of time and the candles are lost either above or below the screen. Sorry, but for the life of me, I see no use for it in this fashion.

Please tell me that I am doing it wrong and that you can really set the vertical range by xx by in/cm...

I set it to the number of ticks visible in the panel that I want. During large price moves that will cause the prices to run off the chart. With a fixed scale, there is really no way around that. You can hold ctrl and drag the y-axis to put the prices where you want them. However, I would really like to see an auto-center option.

We only support a fixed range as you have found out which is an fixed upper and lower boundary. This upper/lower boundary can be changed and you can move this range up/dlown as VTrader suggested.

I am very, very disappointed in this.

How do I turn the AutoScale off permanently then?

When ever I try to manually change the chart scaling, it gets stuck in Fixed mode. So when I scroll the chart, everything rolls off the top or bottom of the screen.

Instead of an auto center, would it be possible to just keep the last price on the screen?

Similar to auto scaling, when the last bar bar goes outside the current axis range, slide the axis range up/down to accommodate the new tick.

This would allow more data to be kept on the screen at the right edge, instead of having it vanish of the screen. I would be ok if this was just for the last bar on the chart.

I see your point, as I am not a fan of AutoCenter (had that at TradeStation), just basically want to keep the last price on the screen.

The item called AutoScale should really be called FixedRange or AutoRange. What is really needed is a FixedScale and AutoScale.

Sorry you are disappointed. If you are running without a fixed range chart, you have to have one object on a panel with AutoScale enabled. If you only have one object, then autoscale will be enabled.

Hey, disappoinment is a way of life... ;-)

Anyway, think I am missing something here. When I add an SMA and a CCI to a bare chart then click on the right panel hold the mouse button down and scroll the mouse down (to compress the chart price range), it jumps in to Fixed mode. If I enabled or disable autoscale on the SMA or CCI, it still does the same thing. How do I get rid of that Fixed scaling? Checked help (I know rewriting), and did some searches and didn't find anything on it.

                Thanks!

Click the little "F" in the upper right corner of the y-axis.

I did that. Then I readjust the Y axis again and it comes back again. I want to kill that thing so it never comes back again. This is no longer a feature it is a real annoyance and needs to have an OFF button or setting somewhere. What I was hoping for in the past is now something I never want to see again!

All I want now is the way 6.5 handles it, turn it off so it never comes back.

                      You have two options:

                      - You can have the scale automatically generated based on all objects in a panel that have "Autoscale' set to true. NT then takes all of these objects, calculates the min/max thresholds of all objects and uses that as the min/max range of the scale

                      OR

                      - You can manually fix the min/max range to user defined settings by either manipulating the y-axis in the margin to change the absolute value of the range or moving the range up/down. Alternatively, you can set this fixed range in the panel properties window by double clicking in the y margin

So it can not do just what 6.5 does and nothing more?

                          jrs,

Correct, the behavior is different than 6.5.
