    Range Bar appearance

    Greetings!

I recently downloaded 6.5 for its ability to use range bars. A coupleof questions.

    1. When I pan in/out, the bar width needs to be changed manually in order to look "right." (It works fine in tic, time, and volume bars, but not in range bars.)

    2. I am using OpenTick for the datafeed, and yet the bars appear different on the NinjaTrader using 2 Range and Ensign using 50 range. (These are equivalent, as NT uses #of tics, and Ensign uses number of points divided by 100.) Again, see charts.

Also, when do a Swing calculation for the OBV (Panel 2), there are spots where the plot reverts to zero (the initial assignment).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    :-)

    Thanks!

    1) Sorry, not sure follow. Please elaborate.
    2) Which charts with data from which providers are you comparing? Please make sure you only compare data from the same providers. Different providers will give you a different set of ticks resulting in different range bars.
    3) Not sure what you mean by your comment on the Swing indicator. "SwingOBV" is not a NT standard indicator. I suggest contacting the author for clarification.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'll try to explain better.

For question #1, when plotting time, tick, or volume charts, when zooming in, the bar widths adjust appropriately, meaning you can discern the bars well regardless of zoom level.

1-min charts showing this are shown in Charts 1 and 2 below.

When plotting Range bar charts, however, when zooming in, the bar widths over adjust ... meaning they get too think at high zoom levels and they need to be adjusted manually in Chart Properties. This is shown in Charts 3 and 4 below.

In both the "Zoomed Out" charts for 1-min and 2-range (1 & 3), the initial bar width was 3. When I zoomed in, the 1-min bar width automatically adjusted to 9, whereas the 2-range bar width adjusted to 14, making the bars look blobby.

I guess I'm saying that for the range bar charts, the bar widths are automatically adjusted to be too thick.

      Does this make sense?

      Thanks!

      :-)

Because I can only upload 5 charts per post, I'll try to address the other two points in my original post in a new post.

        Hi goforbroke !

The type of the bars (how are bars build - Minute, Tick, Range) is independent of the style of the bars (how are they drawn - line on close, candle, OHLC). Means the minute bars should have the same behaviour as you zoom in than the range bars.

If the range bars look to clumsy for you, you may try to decrease the thickness of the OHLC bar with Alt + <arrow up>, or you can increase the distance between the OHLC 'bars' with Ctrl + <arrow down>, makes it look like you want it to. You can also use chart properties -> Bar width.

You may also save the chart template afterwards (right click on chart -> templates -> save as default).

        Kind regards,
        Christian

For question #2, I was concerned about the difference between two charts, one plotted using NinjaTrader and one using Ensign.

I use the same OpenTick feed for both.

I am running both packages simultaneously, NT with 2-range charts (each increment for NT is one tick, or .25) and Ensign with 50-range charts (each increment for Ensign is 1/100 point, or .25). So these should be comparable.

Chart 1 shows the NT plot, and Chart 2 shows the Ensign plot. Note that there are differences in the bars between the two programs. While the absolute numbers for each bar is the same, the open/close (and therefore red/green) characteristics of those bars are different between the two programs. As a matter of fact, Ensign is displaying the red/green nature of the bars incorrectly! While an open>close in NT is correctly green, in Ensign, it is red! So it's THEIR problem, not yours.

Hmmm ... I'll have to ask Ensign why the bars are not displaying correctly.

          Ok ... Onto #3 ...

I've developed a custom indicator that does a Swing(5) of the OBV (I merely took the Swing function and replaced Low[0] and High[0] with OBV[0]). ... it is shown on Panel 2. There are several occurrences in which, rather than providing the Swing high (as shown in the green dots), the zero value is plotted instead. This is shown in Chart 3.

Just curious as to why this would happen.

          Thanks, again!

Reply to #1 - Range Bar thickness when zooming

Yes, I've manually done that to make them look less clumsy.

Is there a way in which I can adjust the degree to which the bar widths are increased/decreased when zooming in/out?

For example, on the 1-min charts, the bar widths went from 3 to 9 (which was appropriate so the bars would not look clumsy) but on the 2-range charts, using the same "zoom in factor," the bar widths went from 3 to 14, making them look clumsy. Is there any way I can globally change that ratio?

            Thanks, Christian!

              Unfortunately this is not supported

On #3) I suggest debugging your custom indicator as per here: http://www.ninjatrader-support.com/v...ead.php?t=3418
