How can I run NT8 on either a primary or backup computer.

    Hi,

Although I only have a few charts open and all indicators on On Bar Close with no system(CPU 20% ram 20% , network 2% , etc) Ninja becomes intermittently unresponsive. For real time trading this is obviously a serious problem. It's highly doubtful that the performance problem is with one of the indicators I have been running for years. The script performance monitor shows insignificant utilization. No

I have a similar backup system and would like the option of starting NT8 Desktop on one or the other but getting new machine ID error messages and unable to run on the backup system.

Can someone please advise me on how to run on two system (not simultaneously).

    Thank you very much.

    Hello demarcog,

    Thank you for using NinjaTrader.

You shouldn't have any issue running on two computers both simultaneously or individually. If you are receiving a specific Machine ID error, what is the full error message you are receiving?

In regard to any performance issues you are experiencing, first, I highly recommend going through our Performance Tips which outline all the best methods for reliable performance from NinjaTrader on any computer.

Be sure to install all available updates for your PC from the Windows Settings > Update and Security page as well. Manually check for updates and reboot your PC after any are installed.

If you are using any 3rd-party add-ons, please keep in mind that we do not control how well they perform, and the more you ask of NinjaTrader to load on your charts, the more it pushes your PC which may result in freezing or unresponsiveness.

You may also clear old historical and cache data by doing the following:
    • Shut down NinjaTrader
    • Go to the 'Documents/NinjaTrader 8/db' folder on your computer
    • Remove the 'cache', 'day', 'minute', and 'tick' folders
    • Important: Do not remove any other files within the NinjaTrader Documents folder
When you restart NinjaTrader, you may notice a longer initial load time as all historical data on your charts is re-downloaded, but your overall performance should be better.

Thank you in advance for the clarification. We look forward to your response.

Your problem is that your computer's have different machine IDs, and there's no way to get them to match. I think your only option is to run your NT8 desktop over a vps instead. Then you can connect to the vps from any of your computers. That's what I do with ninjatrader vps. Essentially it's running the trading workspace in the cloud, so there's no need to have multiple machine ids.

        JustinD,

As requested I attached the error message popup to the initial post

It appears as Backtester831 indicated that other users have the same problem when trying to run NT8 on another system?

        Thank you

What exactly is the problem? Is it that your 3rd party indicators don't work on the 2nd machine?

EDIT: Sorry I see now the screenshot you posted

Yes, everyone gets that. But it's not a "problem", it's a feature.

NinjaTrader calculates a unique machine ID for every computer running NinjaTrader. The only purpose of the machine ID is for 3rd party vendor to permission their addons. So you basically have to contact all of your vendors that you bought indicators from and ask if they'd be so kind as to add a 2nd machine ID for you. Some will, but many will likely want you to buy it again.

That's why I recommended the VPS route because then you only need to have 1 machine (the server), and you can use it through any of your computers.

            Hello backtester831,

            Thank you for using NinjaTrader.

Yes, this will happen if you transfer your files to a different installation or PC. When the NinjaTrader platform detects a Machine ID change, it will automatically remove your license key (if you're on NinjaTrader 8.0), username & password, and other sensitive information. This is a purposeful security feature meant to prevent others from being able to access your personal information simply by stealing your files and loading them onto another PC.

NinjaTrader does not control your machine ID directly. Your Machine ID is generated by NinjaTrader based on your PC's fundamental hardware (like RAM, motherboard, etc.) and fundamental software (BIOS/UEFI version, Windows updates, firmware updates, etc.). If any of these items change, your Machine ID is likely to change as well. There is no way to manually change your Machine ID.

You may follow the steps below to reconnect to your account(s) after a Machine ID change
            • First, Copy/Paste your Live License Key into the Help > License Key window
            • Re-enter your username and password for your connections in the Connections > configure window
            • If you are using any 3rd-party add-ons and the Machine ID has impacted their Licensing, you will need to reach out to the add-on vendors directly with your new Machine ID which may be viewed in the Help > About window
            • Lastly, you will want to disable Global Simulation Mode from the Control Center > Tools drop-down menu
Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
